Today, like never before, people of faith are being forced to make decisions that either violate their faith or penalize them in some way for their religious beliefs, whether it be losing a job, paying a fine, etc.
Liberty Institute is helping to ensure Americans’ Freedom of
Conscience is protected. Last week, we
submitted an Amicus Brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in
support of a family-owned pharmacy, Ralph’s Thriftway, and two individual
pharmacists who are standing strong for their faith.
The original lawsuit is over specific rules in the
Washington Administrative Code, added by the Washington State Board of Pharmacy
in 2007. These rules subject pharmacists to professional discipline for
refusing to fill prescriptions for abortifacient drugs and prohibit pharmacies from
refusing to deliver a lawfully prescribed or approved medicine – including Plan
B and other abortifacient drugs.
These rules place both the pharmacy and the pharmacists in a
position where they have to choose between violating their religious beliefs or
potentially losing their jobs and even their businesses. Today, situations like
this are becoming more and more common, especially with the new healthcare
reform law and HHS mandate, which is the biggest infringement on Americans’
religious freedom we have ever seen.
