Recently, we documented more than 600 cases of hostility toward religion. In just the past few weeks, as Christmas draws near, we are seeing radical groups ramp up their efforts to take away your First Amendment right to freely express your faith.
The future of religious freedom is in jeopardy, but there is much hope. Because when we stand, we can win.
Liberty Institute has seen this firsthand in our own cases, including Angela Hildenbrand, Opulent Life Church, the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial Cross and the Kountze Cheerleaders. In each of these cases, it only took one person, one group or one church to take a stand. When they did, we were able to work together to secure great victories for religious freedom.
We are also hearing other hopeful stories as we get closer to Christmas. Just last week, a federal court ruled that a family in Michigan has the right to display a Nativity scene on a public median.
Every December, since 1945, John Satawa and his family erected a Nativity scene in their town of Warren, Mich. In 2008, the local road commission received a threatening demand letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, claiming that the display violated separation of church and state. After that, the county denied Satawa’s permit application because of the display’s religious theme.
The family made the bold choice to stand for their beliefs, and after four years of legal battles, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled in their favor.
John Satawa told The Detroit Free Press that the display will return on December 15, and he is “pleased with the message that will send.”
“I’m very happy we’re able to keep Christ in Christmas,” he said. “My feeling is this is a great victory for Christians in this country.”
This is just one of the many examples of individuals courageously standing up for what is truly important to them – their faith. There are no limits to what radical groups like Freedom From Religion Foundation, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the ACLU will do to religiously cleanse our nation. The only hope is if people continue to stand strong.
