Liberty Institute Weighs in on Important Supreme Court Case

IN THE PUBLIC ARENA

On January 7, Liberty Institute submitted a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of distinguished Christian theologians and scholars, supporting a request for the High Court to hear a crucial religious freedom case.

Liberty filed the friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of Dr. Mark Bailey, Dr. Darrell Bock, Dr. Stephen Evans, Dr. Wayne Grudem, Dr. Wayne House, Dr. Peter Lillback, Dr. Albert Mohler, Jr., Fr. Ray Ryland, and Michael Thigpen. The theologians seek to overturn a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in the case Galloway v. Town of Greece, which declared the town’s legislative prayers unconstitutional because they were not religiously diverse.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State originally appealed the case to the Second Circuit on behalf of two individuals who objected to the prayers.

“Americans have every right under the Constitution to pray publically before governmental bodies in whichever way they so choose,” said Liberty Institute General Counsel Jeff Mateer. “Forcing any person—theologian, scholar or any other private citizen—to censor his speech and dictating what he may or may not pray violates the First Amendment of the Constitution.”

Liberty Institute is working tirelessly to combat the aggressive attacks from groups like Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Freedom From Religion Foundation and the ACLU. These attacks are only increasing, and we need your continued support to ensure that our beloved First Freedom – the freedom of religion – is protected and restored.

Please, pray that the Supreme Court agrees to hear this important case and share Liberty Institute’s information with your friends and family. We are here to help towns and cities across America facing this type of religious discrimination, but we need you to help spread the word.

Also, please continue to give generously. As the attacks on our religious freedom increase, your financial support is more crucial than ever. Because when we have the money to defend our constitutional freedoms, we are very effective…and we can WIN.
