IN THE SCHOOL
The Kountze High School Cheerleaders have proven time and time again that they aren’t afraid to stand up for what is right…and last week was no exception.
During three intense days of depositions, seven young girls, ranging in age from 14 to 17, sat through hours of brutal questioning by Kountze ISD’s attorneys. Our young heroes held their own against a pretty aggressive opposition.
No matter how tough it got, these brave girls stood strong and handled themselves with grace and dignity, proving they will not back down easily when it comes to protecting their religious freedoms.
The cheerleaders have been in the national spotlight since last fall when they were banned from writing Bible verses on the run-through banners at school football games. The Kountze superintendent made the hasty decision to ban the signs after the district received a threatening demand letter from the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).
Liberty Institute quickly stepped in on behalf of the cheerleaders. With volunteer attorney David Starnes, Liberty Institute obtained a temporary injunction allowing the student-made banners to continue for the remainder of the season, but a full trial is set for June 2013.
Last week’s depositions marked the start of what is shaping up to be an intense battle for students’ religious freedom, and the attorneys for the school district are proving to be unrelenting in their attempts to rattle these young women. In fact, the district’s lead attorney has decided that deposing the high school cheerleaders was not enough…he now wants to question the Kountze junior high cheerleaders and several of the cheerleaders parents and sponsors.
Sound outrageous? It does, but unfortunately we are seeing more and more outrageous attacks everyday as the assaults on religious freedom in our public schools increase at an alarming rate. Groups like FFRF, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the ACLU are sweeping the country, intimidating school districts in an attempt to eliminate any trace of religion from public view.
Liberty Institute works tirelessly to be one step ahead of these aggressive groups. If you know of any student, teacher or district facing this type of religious hostility, tell them Liberty is here to help free of charge, and have them contact us at 972-941-4444, or through email at email@example.com.
Also, please continue to give generously. Your financial support is crucial to not only the Kountze Cheerleader case, but also to our many other school cases. In fact, every dollar donated doubles in value because of the world-class attorneys who work with us, selflessly donating their time to the fight for religious freedom.
